The Windows PC version of CAPS will be released this week. This release will be based on
Tcl/Tk version 8.3.1 that includes some bug fixes to the Tcl/Tk release 8.3. The Tk code
that writes a canvas photo object to postscript has finally been implimented correctly in
Tk. We nolonger need to maintain a patched version of Tk to allow photo objects in a
canvas to print correctly. The upgraded release of CAPS which also includes some minor bug
fixes and is likely to be released as Version 2.1.1. CAPS can currently read an
process ATSR-2 GBT data in addition to AVHRR data. If users would like to be able to read
and process data from other satellite please let us know.

Investigation of the situation with the AVHRR calibration is proceeding. Our extrapolation gives comparable results with those of Rao and Chen and the figures that the Canadian Center for Remote Sensing are using. The Rao and Chen predicted slope is greater that our extrapolation and and will give different results in the future. We are developing a dynamic calibration comparison plot of the time variation in AVHRR calibration to try keep users informed about the calibration and to try to avoid errors in the system. Version 2.1 of CAPS is in pre release test mode including a Windows PC version. We are also moving to remove the password access from this web site.

CAPS version 2.0.3 has been released. Users are warned to treat the NOAA 14 calibration information with increasing caution. The last real measured values for the coefficients are over a year old and the current results are derived by extrapolation. We are attempting to gain access to updated measurements and will make these available as soon as possible. The Windows PC version of CAPS is expected to be released within the next two weeks. This version will run under Windows 95/98 and Windows NT.
