AN OVERVIEW OF MODIS LAND SCIENCE PRODUCTS

NASA's Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is an earth-imaging instrument now aboard both the Terra and Aqua polar-orbiting spacecrafts. Each instrument acquires near-daily whole-earth images in 36 spectral bands for global observation of oceans, atmosphere, and land. Global land products, which are designed primarily for global-scale climate and carbon balance models, are grouped into three product suites:

Energy Balance Suite: surface reflectance, land surface temperature, bidirectional reflectance (BRDF)/albedo, and snow cover;

Vegetation Parameters Suite: vegetation indexes, leaf-area index and photosynthetic energy absorption, and photosynthesis/net primary production;

Land Cover-Land Use Suite: Land cover/land-cover dynamics, vegetation cover and type proportions (continuous fields), land cover conversion, and fires and burnt areas.

This talk presents an overview of these products and their applications.
